Sports Dentistry in Aberdeen

Looking after your smile, whatever your sport

At Andrew Scott Dental Care, we help professional athletes, amateur competitors and people who play sport for fun look after their oral health.
We are proud to be the Official Dental Partner of Aberdeen Football Club. We take that responsibility seriously: our team have undertaken additional training to understand the specific oral health needs of people taking part in sport, from the demands of training and sports nutrition to protecting teeth against injury.

Our partnership goes beyond dental treatment. We work closely with AFC to provide oral health education, helping players understand how their daily habits, training routines and nutrition can affect their teeth and gums. We want good oral health to be a practical part of looking after their overall wellbeing.

Whether you play for a team, train for endurance events or enjoy staying active, your dental care should take account of your sporting life.

Sports oral health essentials

Sports and energy drinks

Sports drinks can have a role in fuelling prolonged or demanding exercise, but frequent exposure to sugar and acid can affect your teeth.

Sugar increases the risk of tooth decay, while acidic drinks can wear away tooth enamel. Even sugar-free energy drinks may be acidic.

To help protect your smile:

  • Choose water for everyday hydration.
  • When sports drinks are needed, avoid holding or swishing them around your mouth.
  • Rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
  • Avoid sipping sugary or acidic drinks throughout the day.
  •  Keep up regular dental checks and brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Tell us about the drinks, gels and snacks you use during training. We can help you build an oral health routine that works alongside your sporting needs.

Mouth breathing and dry mouth

During exercise, you may breathe through your mouth more often. Alongside sweating and dehydration, this can leave your mouth feeling dry. Saliva helps protect your teeth by washing away food particles and neutralising acids, so a dry mouth deserves attention.

Keep well hydrated before, during and after exercise, and take regular drinks of water. If you frequently notice a dry mouth, including when you are resting, speak to our dental team. We can help identify possible causes and advise on protecting your teeth.

Sports mouthguards: protection that fits

A well-fitting sports mouthguard helps reduce the risk of injury to your teeth and mouth during contact sports and activities where collisions, falls or impacts are possible.
A custom-made mouthguard is designed to fit your teeth securely and comfortably, allowing you to breathe and speak more easily than a poorly fitting guard.

Ask our team about the right mouthguard for your sport, and wear it during training as well as competition. Bring your existing mouthguard to dental appointments so we can check its condition and fit. Children and teenagers need regular checks as their teeth and jaws develop.
