Oral hygiene is very important to maintaining health teeth, gums and mouth. At Andrew Scott Dental Care we have a dental therapist, Rachel Jackson, who provides oral hygiene treatments. Rachel’s main priority is to prevent and treat gum disease by focusing on showing you the best ways to keep your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky, whitish deposit that forms on your teeth when bacteria mixes with food and saliva. The bacteria in plaque produce chemicals that cause gum disease. In turn, this can lead to bleeding gums, gum shrinkage and ultimately tooth loss.
At your oral hygiene appointment it is likely a scale and polish will be carried out. This treatment is usually pain free, however if you experience any discomfort please advise the hygienist as she can administer anaesthetic creams, or provide you with a local anaesthetic if necessary.
Should you suffer from periodontal gum disease, an infection of the structures surrounding the teeth, we have registered periodontal specialist, George Cherukara who can treat this type of disease.
Periodontitis is a disease which attacks the bone and tissue and causes a gap between the gum tissue and the tooth. This causes a weakening of the gums and the formation of open pockets of bacteria to occur which over a long period of time. This can result in more serious infection which can lead to bone and gum tissue loss.
